The Epic of Gilgamesh
Separation
Call to Adventure: A trait that leads Gilgamesh to adventures is his desire for fame. When Gilgamesh befriends Enkidu, the adventures begin. One of their first adventure is to kill Humbaba, the protector of the forest. They enter the Ceder Forest and defeat Humbaba, returning to the city with Humbaba's head and a new sense of fame.
Crossing First Threshold: This is when Gilgamesh and Enkidu first set of to enter the Ceder Forest. They leave the city of Urk to enter the field of adventure.
Initiation
Apostasis: The death of Enkidu transforms Gilgamesh. The loss of his sidekick/companion, leaves him devastated and horrified by the thought of his own death. He leaves all the power, wealth and fame behind to embark on a quest
The Ultimate Boon: Gilgamesh learns to appreciate his life until he dies. His encounter with Utnapishtim taught him that death was apart of life. Utnapishtim reminds him that he is 2/3 divine and 1/3 human. This gives Gilgamesh a new outlook and appreciation for his kingdom and his life. The achievement of the goal of the quest, allows for Gilgamesh to return to Uruk as a new king.
Return
Crossing the Return Threshold: When Gilgamesh returns to the city of Urk, he has a new sense of purpose and outlook. All that he learned from his journey, allows him to be a good king.
Freedom to Live: Once Gilgamesh finds out the reality about his death, he then can live his life. He transformed from a greedy, evil ruler to a man who understands and accepts his fate.
